Jiang Mingjun Presents the United Nations High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace

(IESCO news by Duan Ying) The “United Nations High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace” was held by the 68th UN General Assembly on September 9th. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the 68th UN General Assembly John W. Ashe, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Lakshmi Puri and other UN officers and advocates of culture of peace attended the forum and delivered speech. The delegates of International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) were presented at the forum under the leadership of Jiang Mingjun. Besides the whole participation in the promotion and planning work of the forum, IESCO also held an “International Ecological Art Exhibition” during the forum to further carry forward the realization of culture of peace in ecological fields.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in this speech that, in face of today’s world full of challenges, people should promise to respect others’ rights that are different from their own and work together to popularize and deepen the shared universal value.

Ban Ki-moon said that, 25 years ago, the concept of “Culture of Peace” was first put forward in the Yamoussoukro International Peace Conference supported by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Just like what was said in Yamoussoukro Declaration, peace is not only the end of war, but also a behavioral pattern. Therefore, peace cannot be achieved only by treaty; it should be cultivated by everyone’s dignity and rights.

Ban Ki-moon said that, “peace means obtaining important service of education and health, especially for girls and women. It still means that every young girl and boy has the opportunity to choose their own life; the development is sustainable and the biodiversity on earth is protected; and people live together on a more inclusive, respectful and mutual understandable basis than ever.”

Ban Ki-moon stressed that, for the abundant challenges today, the most powerful weapon of human beings is not bombs or guns, but the shared values, which in other words, are the hope of peace, development and human rights and the culture of peace.

The United Nations “High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace” was the result of the NO. 53\243 Resolution of the UN General Assembly on September 13th, 1999. It passed the “Culture of Peace Declaration and Action Agenda” in agreed way.

In order to call on countries and organizations to jointly create a free, democratic world of no violence, IESCO has actively cooperated with “High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace” to carry out the publicity work of the culture of peace. Among which, the UN Initiative and Technology for the Youth (UNITY) Magazine, sponsored by IESCO and UN Habitat, has opened a column on the topic of the “Culture of Peace Declaration and Action Agenda” since July, 2012 and continues its promotion and report on “education of the culture of peace, dialogue and cooperation” in a vivid and detailed way. It targets at bringing the culture of peace into a global activity and letting media play the role of bringing positively influence on youths.

During the forum, UN Economic and Social Council President Martin Sajdik, UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Habitat Executive Director Joan Clos, UN Under-Secretary-General Tegegnework Gettu and UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Myanmar Vijay Nambiar met with Jiang Mingjun and his delegates.
