IESCO Attended the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee of Habitat III

 (IESCO reporter: Chen Shuang) The third session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom3) of the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) was held in Surabaya, Indonesia, from 25th July to 27th July, 2016. This preparatory conference is designed to discuss issues related to sustainable urban development, laying the foundation for the formulation of Post-2015 Development Agenda. International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) was invited to attend the conference.

On the opening ceremony, which was held on the morning of 25th July, H.E. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, Vice President of Indonesia and Co-chairman of IESCO, gave significant remarks. H.E. H Soekarwo, Governor of East Java Province, mentioned in his speech that he is looking forward to the new urban agenda, and expects that the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations can be achieved in the coming 20 years.

Youth activities were launched in parallel with the conference, encouraging urban youth to make a contribution to the sustainable development of cities and communities. At the Urban Youth Conference on the 24th July, youth from different countries and UN officials had an in-depth discussion on “urban equality and youth development”. Yu Beibei, a Chinese youth delegate of IESCO was invited to share her thoughts and opinions on educational equality and youth empowerment at the conference, which triggered heated responses.

Before that, a statement titled “ Youth Empowerment: An Important Task towards Sustainable Development” submitted by IESCO was approved by ECOSOC, in which youth empowerment is prioritized in the process of pursuing sustainable development. The statement will act as a catalyst promoting youth empowerment and youth innovation, facilitating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
