The Banquet of the 5th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations

Ban Ki-moon addressed the banquet of the 5th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

The city government of Vienna held a banquet for the guests and delegates of the 5th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

Dr. Jiang Mingjun, the Director-General of the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO), led a delegation to attend the 5th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Vienna from Feb 25 to Feb 28.

During the forum, Jiang Mingjun met with some of the leaders and ministers world politicians. He introduced them to the concept of ecological safety, the achievements made by the IESCO since its establishment and the development plan in the coming five years. He was highly praised for his contribution to ecological safety in the world.

During the forum, Jiang released a declaration for world ecological civilization and a program of action for ecological safety.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, urged the global youths to make contributions to solving the global issues. He expressed his willingness to invite them to participate to help with issues of the world in the economic, political and environmental transition.

He also presented awards to the youth leaders for their contributions to the cause.

The alliance of civilizations was proposed by the former Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and the then Prime Ministers of Spain and Turkey.

In November, 2006, Ban named Jorge Sampaio, former Portuguese President, as a high representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

The priority of the UNAOC is to mobilize different countries to launch coordinated activities to enhance cross-cultural exchanges and cooperation among nations, peoples and social groups based on political willingness.

It pays special attention to improving the inner relations in the western society and the Muslin world as well as the relations between them, in order to reduce the continuing tensions and differences.

With mutual respect, tolerance for the diversified beliefs, cultures and languages as its core values, UNAOC launches campaigns in cross-cultural education, youth cultivation, free expression of ideas via media, and freedom of migration for a more tolerant and diversified society.

More than 1,000 delegates, including nearly 100 politicians from different countries, attended the forum.
