Youth Forum 2013 held in New York

(IESCO News)Youth Forum 2013: “Shaping Tomorrow’s Innovators – Leveraging Science, Technology, Innovation and Culture for Today’s Youth” was held by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on 27 March 2013,. UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Deputy Secretary-General Wu Hongbo and President of the Economic and Social Council Mr. Néstor Osorio attended the conference and delivered speeches.

The Youth Forum was organized by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) with the support of “New York Tech Meet Up” .

Mr. Ban Ki-moon highlighted the importance to unleash the power of youth to support development and sustainability, particularly through science, technology, innovation (STI) and culture. He also emphasized the significance of educating young girls and women. In the end, he stated that the United Nations is ready to partner with all young people to solve the problems caused by global crisis and unemployment.

The forum was separated into three sessions, i.e., Girls and Young Women in Science, Youth: An Engine for Creative Economy and Creating Buzz: Using Social Media to Make Ideas Happen. Different speakers were selected as representatives at each session.

The main goal of this forum was to provide a platform for youth to be engaged in dialogues with various stakeholders to explore possible ways and means for promoting global and sustainable development on the basis of Science, Technology, Innovation (STI), and culture and broaden the vision of youth as actors for development of human beings and problem-solvers.
