37th Session of the World Heritage Committee Opens in Cambodia

(IESCO news) On July 16, 2013, an IESCO delegation headed by Mr. Jiang Mingjun attends the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee held by UNESCO in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The conference has over 1300 participants from more than 120 countries and international organizations.

At the outset of the conference, the prime minister of the host country Mr. Hun Sen said: The World Heritage Committee is officially becoming an important global administrative organization for protecting human culture and natural heritage now. It is a special platform to enhance dialogues among civilizations and inter-cultural cooperation. This conference would become another milestone of heritage protection and embody people’s will to protect heritages. He called on all countries, large or small, rich or poor, to make endeavors to protect human culture and civilization.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova encouraged all member states to pool political wills, work together and cooperate to properly protect cultural heritages in dangerous regions. She said that we should pay high attention to cultural heritages in countries or regions with risks of military conflicts like Mali, Syria and Middle-Africa.

According to the  official portal of  WHC, this conference will last till July 27,2013 and it will evaluate  the applications for listing natural and cultural heritages on the world heritage list  from  the member states on ; review  their  conservations of properties  on the World Heritage List, especially those in imminent danger, and decide which properties need  to be removed from the World Heritage List.. It will also examine requests for international assistance from the World Heritage Fund. It will examine applications of 36 properties for listing on the world heritage list, including 9 natural properties, 4 four mixed natural and cultural properties and 23 cultural properties. Among them are Tianshan in Xinjiang, China and Hani Terrace in Honghe, China as candidates as natural and cultural heritages.
