2013 Euro-Asia Ecological Safety Conference
Successfully Convened in Xi’an

(News Reported by Duan Ying)On Sept. 26 to 27, in the golden and fruitful autumn of 2013, the 2013 Euro-Asia Ecological Safety Conference, organized by the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization(IESCO), the Ministry of Environmental Protection of PRC and People’s Government of Shaanxi Province, and hosted by the Environmental Protection Department of Shaanxi Province, Xi’an Municipal Government and the Management Committee of Chan-ba Ecological District of Xi’an, was successfully convened in the Chan-ba Ecological District in the ancient city of Xi’an. Among 150 guests present, there were over 30 representatives from related countries including China, Russia, Thailand, Cambodia, Nigeria, Samoa, Tonga and Malaysia; officials from  UN-HABITAT; experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences  as well as participants from related financial institutions, intellectual institutions and enterprises. They discussed about how to address climate change, solve ecological crisis, and promote the coordinated development of regional economy, society and ecology.

The conference lasted for 2 days. It was another international, high level and authoritative thematic   conference after the 2011 Euro-Asia Ecological Safety Conference in Xi’an.  The 2013 Euro-Asia Ecological Safety Conference included high-level dialogues, academic research and onsite interactions centered on “Balanced Development of Ecology, Society and Economy”. 

The 2013 Euro-Asia Ecological Safety Conference was declared open on the afternoon of Sept. 26, 2013. Zhang Daohong, Vice Governor of Shaanxi Province; Nalinee Taveesin, Representative of Thai Royal Government for Trade Negotiations; Li Ganjie, Vice Minister of Environmental Protection; Nikolai Lavrov,  Chairman of the Ecological Safety Committee of the Security Council of the Russian Federation; Toomata Tapusalaia Terry Uli, Samoan Ambassador to China; Siamelie Latu, Tongan Ambassador to China; Y.M. Tengku Shamsulbharimr, Prince Regent of Malaysia, and Jiang Mingjun, Director-General of IESCO, attended the conference and delivered speeches.

After the opening ceremony, the experts and representatives had heated discussions about five themes, namely, Peaceful Development and Dialogue of Civilizations, Ecological Safety and Protection of Biodiversity, Youth Empowerment and Urban Ecological Safety, Ecological Safety and Innovation of Science and Technology, and Ecological Safety and Corporate Social Responsibilities. They explored solutions to the issues such as resources, environment, society and economy which affected human development. 

Over 30 guests delivered excellent keynote speeches which were well-received. The speakers included  Nikolai Lavrov, Chairman of the Ecological Safety Committee of the Security Council of the Russian Federation; Zhang Baoxin, Member of Party Committee of the Three Gorges Office of China's State Council; Qian Yinan, Vice Mayor of Xi’an; Cheng Miangui, Vice Mayor of Weinan city in Shaanxi Province; Wang Xinrong, Vice Director of the Department of Environmental Protection of Shaanxi Province,Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, Chairman of the UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Empowerment and Ecological Safety Executive Committee, Rozhkov Grigory, Director of Economic Appraisal Center of Russian Academy of Sciences;        Li Dongxiao, Bureau-level Diplomatic Officer of International Department, Central Committee of CPC; Wu Jisong, Director of China Circular Economy Research Center;; Gulelat Kebede, Director of Urban Economy and Finance at UN-HABITAT; Axumite Gebre-Egziabher, Director of UN-HABITAT Africa Office; Men Xuan, Head of the Management Committee of Chan-ba Ecological Area and Wang Gongli, general manager of Xi’an Chan-ba Development Co..

During the conference, Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary General; the spokesperson for the President of the Federation of Russia;  Sok An, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia; Lin Wenyi, Vice-chairwoman of the  National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)  Chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League (TSL) and Chen Zongxing, vice-chairman of the  National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice chairman of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP) Central Committee  sent congratulatory letters or telegraphs on the success of 2013 Euro-Asia Ecological Safety Conference.
