UNAOC Doha Session Focuses on Sustainable Development

 (IESCO, Doha Qatar) On the morning of April 29th (local time), annual UNACO focal points meeting and preparatory conference for the sixth UNAOC global forum was convened at Doha, the capital city of Qatar with focus on sustainable development.   
The opening ceremony witnessed the remarks by H. E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations; H. E. Dr. Hassan Ibrahim Al-Mohannadi, the Vice President of the Qatar Committee for Alliance of Civilizations and UNAOC Focal Point of the State of Qatar; H. E. Mr. Wu Hongbu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs; and Mr. Olav Kjorven, Special Adviser to the UNDP Administrator on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The over 200 attendees included representatives from member states of UNAOC, EU, Africa Union, Arab League, UNFAO, UNESCO, and ambassadors of different states to Qatar. 

At the session, the participants conducted discussions over the preparation for the sixth UNAOC Global Forum themed as Peace & Prosperity for Sustainable Development, and explored strategies on sustainable development by regions.  The outcome document of the Doha Declaration was adopted. The Declaration recognizes the contributions made by the representatives of the Group of Friends to the principles and goals of UNAOC, and the welfare of all the people; the important roles of UNAOC  in  youth, education, media and immigration, as well as new spotlights designated by the high-level representative, such as sustainable development, ecology, art, sports and entertainment in trans-cultural issues and broader UN work; and the vital relationship between peace, stability and sustainable development. 

As a cooperative organization of UNAOC, IESCO was invited to attend the meeting. Jiang Mingjun, the president of UNAOC Ecological Civilization Committee and General-Director of IESCO, delivered a keynote speech entitled  “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values”. He said in his speech that ecological civilization is featured by the interdependence between human and nature, between man and man, and human and society, and harmony and progress with the purpose to regulate the selfish behaviors of mankind for the realization of peace and development. This is also a critical issue of all the countries around the world. 

Given the importance of ecological civilization, the session approved to take “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values” as an important topic in the special session of the sixth UNAOC Global Forum that will be held in August, 2014 in Bali, Indonesia. 

Related Links: On March 31st, 2014, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, and Jiang Mingjun, General-Director of IESCO jointly signed a strategic MOU at the Secretary of UNAOC in New York. Both parties agreed to devote to ecological safety and sustainable development, conduct dialogue mechanism on ecological civilization, explore and spread new ways of diversified cultures and peaceful development. On April 2nd 2014, the Ecology Committee of UNAOC declared its establishment at the UN Headquarter in New York, and Jiang Mingjun was appointed as the first president of the Ecology Civilization Committee of UNAOC.
