The Sixth Global Forum of UNAOC Opens Its Curtain in Bali Island

(August 29, 2014 IESCO news by Duan Ying) The Sixth Global Forum of UNAOC opened its curtain in Bali, Indonesia. International political elites including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the 68th Session the UN General Assembly John W. Ashe, President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Prime Minister of Timor-Leste Xanana Gusmao, delegations of national governments, and leaders of international governments, in total over 1500 people, attended the conference. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. He pointed out that people of countries in the world shall not be separated by the differences in races, religions, and cultures and the differences should become the foundation for the prosperity of the entire mankind.

The Sixth Global Forum of UNAOC opened its curtain on local time August 29-30 in the Nusa Dua Convention Center of Bali, Indonesia. SG Ban Ki-moon believes that the experience gained from UN’s practice of maintaining peace shows that compared with settling the conflicts, preventing the conflicts works better and is more effective. The aim of establishing UNAOC is to build the bridge for peace and friendship deep down in everyone’s heart and mind. Ban Ki-moon welcomes UNAOC’s commitment in promoting inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogues, which is an important tool for preventing and resolving conflicts. The representatives of all countries got together to provide assist to UNAOC in expanding its root of resolving conflicts and spreading the seeds of peace.

President of the 68th Session the UN General Assembly John W. Ashe pointed out in his speech that the host of this forum Indonesia fully reflects the theme of this forum by its own diversity: Indonesia has over 17,000 islands, showing the geographical and biological diversity; 240 million people come from different cultures, ethnicities, and languages. Ashe said that UNAOC has become a significant global initiative since its establishment in 2005. As the President of the UN General Assembly, he believes the 193 member states of UN are also a unity of diversity. They maintain different features and hold different views, but the common feature of the mankind is to unify people all together.

The Sixth Global Forum of UNAOC aims to enhance the harmony among different civilizations and promote the dialogues among different religions and different civilizations to realize the goal of peaceful development of human beings and harmonious co-existence. In 2005, with the initiatives of Spain and Turkey, former UN SG Kofi Annan proposed the idea of establishing UNAOC, which aims to motivate the forces of all walks of life of the international community to eliminate prejudice, misunderstandings, and conflicts among different civilizations and promote world peace and security.

According to the agreement signed by UNAOC and IESCO in April, the Sixth Global Forum of UNAOC included ecological civilization as an important component and IESCO held the First Ecological Civilization Dialogue entitled with “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values”. President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, Former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Philippine Hon. Mr. Jose de Venecia, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Nepal Hon. Ms. Sujata Koirala, President and CEO of Global Parties Climate Ecological Alliance and Director-General of IESCO Dr. Jiang Mingjun, and Member of Parliament of Cambodia H.E. Mr. Yara Suos attended the conference and delivered important speeches. The Secretary-General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon, President of the 68th Session the UN General Assembly John W. Ashe, and the President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser met with the VIP guests attending the UN Ecological Civilization Dialogue Conference entitled with “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values” respectively. The dialogue conference was moderated by Chief of Cabinet, Office of the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Tariq Al-Ansari.
