The First United Nations Ecological Civilization Dialogue

Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values

 (IESCO news by Duan Ying and Fan Chunyan) As an important platform for discussing how to strengthen the mutual understanding and communication among different countries, nations, and cultures within the UN system, the Sixth Global Forum of United Nations Alliance of Civilizations was held on August 29-30 in Bali, Indonesia. According to the arrangement of UNAOC, IESCO held the First UN Ecological Civilization Dialogue Conference entitled “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values”, focusing on the construction of ecological civilization under the background of the diversified development in the world.

Representatives from national governments, international organizations, enterprises and media attended the dialogue conference and had discussions on “respect the diversified development model of countries”, “take concerted actions in responding to climate change and preserving ecological safety”, and “endeavor to promote the coordinated development of economic globalization and ecological globalization”. The conference stressed that strengthening cooperation is the foundation for solving ecological crises, but the developed countries and the developing countries shall shoulder “common but differentiated responsibilities, because it not only reflects the differences between countries like the level of economic development and historical responsibilities, but also gathers international consensus, namely: Unity in Diversity.

The dialogue conference was moderated by Chief of Cabinet, Office of the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Tariq Al-Ansari. President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, Former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Philippine Hon. Mr. Jose de Venecia, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Nepal Hon. Ms. Sujata Koirala, President and CEO of Global Parties Climate Ecological Alliance and Director-General of IESCO Dr. Jiang Mingjun, Member of Parliament of Cambodia H.E. Mr. Yara Suos, Secretary-General of World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO) Mr. Tageldin Hamad and Deputy Director of the Ecological Agriculture Committee of IESCO Mr. Dang Yongfu attended the conference and made excellent speeches.

This was the first time the UNAOC held an ecological civilization dialogue on the theme of “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values”. Through the dialogues among different civilizations, it will enhance environmental protection, promote the construction of ecological civilization, build ecological safety pattern, and realize the balanced development of economy, society, and environment. In order to increase the attention to ecological civilization, UNAOC set up the “Ecological Civilization Committee of UNAOC”, officially including ecological civilization in the framework of UNAOC and aiming to solve and improve the serious situations of environmental damage, resource shortage, and ecological crises. President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser appointed the Director-General Dr. Jiang Mingjun as the Chairman of the Ecological Civilization Committee of UNAOC.

Dr. Jiang said in his speech that the feature of ecological civilization is the interrelation and harmonious development of human and nature, people and people, and human and society. They aim to set norms for the selfish behaviors of human beings and realize world peace and sustainable development. Therefore, all the countries should strengthen the mutual-trust, conduct pragmatic cooperation, actively preserve ecological safety, and endeavor to build and protect the earth homeland on which human beings depend to survive. This is not only the theme of ecological civilization, but also the common value of the entire mankind.

The President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser mentioned in his speech that UNAOC and IESCO are strategic partners with the same objectives and will have more in-depth pragmatic cooperation on ecological civilization, ecological safety, climate change, environmental protection and biodiversity.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Philippine Hon. Mr. Jose de Venecia spoke about his own opinions in world population environment, the relations between the alliance of political parties and governments, cultural exchange and collision in the world, and the emerging economic and ideological problems in the developing countries. 

The former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Nepal Hon. Ms. Sujata Koirala said in her speech that ecological crisis as a global issue should be considered as a priority by every government. Then she shared Nepal’s experience in environmental protection and pointed out that the government of Nepal will continue to cooperate with IESCO. The two parties will explore a sustainable environmental model.

Member of Parliament of Cambodia H.E. Mr. Yara Suos stressed in his speech that with the premise of considering economic development and environmental protection, green innovation is the best development path for the developing countries. He also introduced the “2013-2030 National Green Development Strategic Plan” of Cambodian government and expressed that Cambodia will consider the sustainable development of environment as a guiding principle in national decision-making.

The Secretary-General of World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO) Mr. Tageldin Hamad and Deputy Director of the Ecological Agriculture Committee of IESCO Mr. Dang Yongfu spoke about the issues on world food safety and the soil damage caused by fertilizers. They believe soil pollution needs the attention of all walks of life. National governments and party alliances should get unified and save the polluted soil and water resources.

The Secretary-General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon, President of the 68th Session the UN General Assembly John W. Ashe, and the President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly and United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser met with the VIP guests attending the UN Ecological Civilization Dialogue Conference entitled with “Ecological Civilization: Time Calling for Common Values” respectively.
